MICF - I Love Green Guide Letters (4)

I Love Green Guide Letters (4)
20th April 2013

The final ILGGL of the MICF and according to Steele the last live show for a while, hopefully not so long that we have to wait until next year. He is doing one in Sydney with Jonathan Holmes of Media Watch which will be interesting to listen to.

Steele was also doing Capril, that's wearing capes for April to bring awareness of depression and mental health.
The guests were Ryan "Toadfish" Moloney, Sam Simmons and Wil Anderson.
Wil and Moloney had obviously been supplied with capes by Steele (they were all Star Wars sheets).
Wil looked quite the part in the black Star Wars cape.
Ready to step into the role of Emperor of the Wilumanti.
Or possible Emperor of the Galactic Republic.
Sam just had a plain cape/bath sheet.

Ryan got to hear what Lawrence Mooney had to say about him on one of the podcasts, and there was a live call that Sam did for Ryan so he could "respond" to Lawrence's comments.
It was, as Wil surmised incredibly funny and everything else was trying to live up to those moment of hilarity.

There were still some interesting revelations.
Sam revealing that the people/production company that helped to produce his show "Problems" (which was written and shot in a 3 weeks or so) thought that it was a bit weird (and it was, and I didn't like it. But I appreciated what it was and while not enjoying it could appreciate it as a piece of comedy narrative) so they pitched "An Elegant Gentleman's Guide to Knife Fighting", which Sam Simmons quoted that production company describing it as a sketch show with "broader audience appeal".
Again I've watched Elegant Gentlemen’s Guide to Knife Fighting, and can see what they're doing but the sketches just aren't funny. With "Problems" I can appreciate it for a bit of weird Australian comedy from Sam Simmons. But "Elegant Gentleman" seems to be trying too hard and with a larger budget to be weird.
There are better and funnier things on the ABC at the moment than "Elegant Gentleman”. The Roast for example produces and excellent show with talent, great writing and a greenscreen.

Wil Anderson almost succeeded in telling, following Steele's prompt of "a Jew, an aboriginal and a gay guy walk into a bar".

As ever with ILGGL the banter and discussion at the start is some of the best parts of the show but the letters are the key part.
Sam broke the one rule of ILGGL "don't interrupt the letters". But that's forgivable considering he's not heard the podcast before. And also doesn't like podcasts supposedly, or doesn't see the need to produce his own.

Wil mentioned (after some "cajoling") his appearance on Home & Away, where he's in the background of 3 episodes in the diner (because they're all those scenes were shot on the same day). Where he's an extra, but decided he was playing a dodgy PE teacher. I will be searching YouTube for it.

All up it was a great end to ILGGL's run in the comedy festival. Really enjoyed myself and the podcast remains one of my highlights of the festival for me.
