MICF 2015 - I Love Green Guide Letters (1)

4:00 pm - 28th March 2015

This year the I Love Green Guide Letters live podcast shows are in the Last Laugh Comedy Club in the Athenaeum Theatre on Collins Street.
I didn’t know this space was in here. I have been to the Athenaeum Theatre in the past, though I can’t recall when or for what. Maybe for a David Strassman show back in the 90s.

One thing the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is good at it’s giving you a little work out prior to the show. Every show seems to be up a large amount of stairs. Take the Melbourne Town Hall Supper Club. Which doesn’t seem like a lot of stairs until you’re 3/4 of the way up the Town Hall.

Leaving aside my issues with stairs for the moment, the Last Laugh Comedy Club is in a very grand space.
Although possibly not the best space for comedy.
All the tables are laid out like banquet, perpendicular with the stage. Which means you have to twist either your head or the chair to look at the stage.
It also means it’s not completely obvious when you walk in where the stage is.
It’s straight ahead when you walk in, on the raised platform. There is another raised platform on the right of the room. Which evidently wasn’t the stage. The other side of the room is the bar.

I chose a seat at the back of the room which was up higher than the other chairs, although was as far from the stage as the width of the room.
It did afford me leg room which is always nice to have in a comedy (or any gig where you’re sitting down).

The guests for this show were Anne “Eddo” Edmonds, Andy Lee and Scott Dooley, along with host Steele Saunders.

There was a lot of lead into the letters.
Mostly about ‘Night Bag Attack’ a fictional band that was mostly concerned with pissing blood clots, beer drinking at cricket games and Andy Lee’s problems with urinating during advert breaks due to BMXing as a child.

Also, Eddo mentioned she’d not had a drink so far in the festival. Which I thought was an odd statement as I thought the festival had only been going for about 3 days at this point. Maybe that’s a long time in comedy festival drinking terms.
Also, Eddo mentioned she rose ever night at 3 am to have a piss.
It was oddly a very urine-themed podcast recording.

Once Steele got to the letters one was about anal rape and ‘Pulp Fiction’, which somehow got onto the use of the ‘dump button’ in radio and Desperate Housewives and Andy Lee not remembering an actress’ name.

The I Love Green Guide Letters podcast live recording really is an excellent show, all live podcast recordings are. For the really cheap price of a ticket you’ll get 4 comedians. It’s great and it’s all original unrehearsed and uncensored stuff. Something which Steele does do when he edits the podcast, so you really need to see the live shows because for any sensitive stuff he’ll add in a <Mr Black> and censor his podcast.
