MICF - Set List

Set List - 8 April 2013

This would be the first show in the MICF that I actually did not enjoy at all.
I laughed, there was stuff I laughed at no doubt but...
I dunno.
The concept is a great one and I can see why comedians rave about it.
It's a huge improvisation thing for stand ups.
I dunno what happened to improvisation. "Space Jump"...
It was big in the 90s and early 2000s and then kinda went away a little bit, maybe it's still big in drama circles, not so much in comedy.

Set List is also on ABC2, and I had seen it before I went to the show and it didn’t really engage me seeing it on TV, but I hoped seeing it in person there’d be something that would grab me.

The basic idea is comedians get topics on a screen and that's what they have to do their stand up around. So one of the topics was "Talk Hitler's Mom (sic) into an abortion".
I went to Set List because several comedians had raved about it, especially Wil Anderson who mentioned it on TOFOP last year and said he’d gone more than once.

But I just did not enjoy seeing any of the comedians. DeAnne Smith was probably the only comedian I vaguely like enough to want to watch and she did a good job.

This was the first show I have thought about walking out of, not because I didn't like what they were doing, but just because I was bored.
The comedy was funny enough and made me laugh but it was a bit...I was reacting somewhat to the audience's enjoyment, not just my own enjoyment of the comedy. There were people next to and in front of me that were definitely enjoying it a lot more than I was.

I did want to enjoy this, the concept I think is a great idea.
I in fact really love the idea of improvisational comedy "stand up without a safety net" as the caption for the show goes.
I think it's a really good idea.

From a writing point of view I think it's a great idea to get your mind working and might experiment with it (somehow) for myself to get my own creative mind working.

But I just didn't engage with any of the comedians, none of them I liked, except for the aforementioned Smith.

I don't think I'll be seeing Set List again as I don't think you know which comedians will be on before hand and I think I'd only want to see it if there were comedians I was a fan of and enjoyed.
Perhaps then if I knew the comedians I’d lock in more with their sense of comedy.
But this time I just did not engage with any of them.
