MICF 2014 - "Karl Chandler's Got Talent"

6th April 2014 - 8:30 pm

At first, at the start of Karl Chandler's show I thought 'oh shit, I've made a mistake, I didn't come to see jokes'.

Well not just jokes.

As I've mentioned in my write up of Steele Saunders’ show “Rosebud” I like narrative based comedy, or rather stand up comedy that has a narrative of some sort.

This is the reason why I didn't see Karl Chandler last year but did see Tommy Dassalo.
I wanted to support the hosts of one of my favourite podcasts, though I didn't want to blindly support them or go to something I knew I wasn’t going to enjoy as much as I might something else.

But this year promised something interesting and different.

Interesting because the gist and a little bit more had already been discussed by Karl Chandler on The Little Dum Dum Club.
Or rather it was the experiences of Charlie Kandler and his alleged performances on an unnamed Got Talent show.

It was interesting, as I had heard that starting point of this show, begun as a little seed and worked through and worked some more, until it's here now presented in an hour show to paying audience members.
Rather than the experiences of Charlie Kandler wanting to neck himself after a particularly bad time locked in a room for 12 hours.

Karl Chandler went on Australia's most recently axed TV talent show.
It didn't go well.

At one or two points during his show I wanted to give Chandler a hug, just feeling for someone who is that down even though it's in the past and even though he found some solace in a woman on a tram I just felt for his story.

Karl Chandler's show was in the Portland Hotel's Pool Room, which was a nice small and intimate venue. It kinda reminded me of the Ladies Lounge in the Forum Theatre that Tommy Dassalo was in last year. It was small without being cramped and small.

After seeing "Karl Chandler’s Got Talent" I think it’d be interesting to listen to the podcast which discusses the exact events. Though with the show it gives context to the podcast and the podcast also gives background to the show. But I think it would be interesting to see the show without knowing the background first.
